Featured Friend: Personable Mixed Breed Puppy Is Eager For Human Pal

January 17, 2009
Ginny. At least this picture doesn't make me look fat!

Ginny did a lousy job centering. At least this picture doesn't make me look fat, like another one she took.

Hi, I’m looking for you. I’m a mixed-breed puppy – probably with some Australian Shepherd –  about 15 weeks old.   I’m not sure how big I’ll get – my feet aren’t quite as big as my pen mates’.  My distinctive coat has it all covered – fluffy white parts, black spots and a rather darling mask.

Ginny says my personality makes me one of her very favorites, and I’m proud to say she thinks I’m smart!  She’s very impressed that I showed my playpen mates how to look less sad and be more friendly to the folks at the adoption fair.

While I really like Ginny, too, she can’t take me home (she’d like to, because I’m so friendly and enthusiastic), but the person I’ll like the best is the one who adopts me.  I hope it’s you!

One of my pen mates, almost as cute as I am.

One of my pen mates - a better poser for photos.

Please visit me at the adoption fair.  Maybe we can take a walk around the store together – I do quite well on a leash.  Maybe you could even give me a forever home.

Featured Friend – Small Adult Dog Yearns For A Loving Home

January 17, 2009
Barney on Santa's lap. Christine and Sophie are in the front row; Nikki is in back.

Barney is the black and white dog on Santa's lap. Christine and Sophie are in the front row; Nikki is in back.

Barney is a cute little guy, about three to four years old.   He looks like a minature Pointer.

The poor pooch ended up at Animal Control in Walsenburg when his owner died.  Barney was about the be euthanized when Aileen rescued him and he joined the other animals at the shelter.   At first, he seemed quite traumatized, but seems to be coming out of his shell.  We can’t vouch for his house training, but it seems unlikely that he was an outside dog – he seems to get cold rather easily (and he could stand to gain a pound).  This dog may require some patience and lots of love to make him feel secure, but he seems like a quiet, pleasant pup.

Would you, or anyone you know, be the perfect fit for Barney?  Stop by the pet adoption fair on Saturdays between 11:15 and 5 – Barney would love to meet you.

Urgent Request – Older Puppies and Dogs Need Loving Homes Now

January 12, 2009

Choose one of us, please…

Waiting For Someone To Love Me

Waiting For Someone To Love Me

We are some of the many black and beautiful older puppies and dogs living at the shelter.

For some reason, black dogs like us have been overlooked lately.  How could this be?  Aren’t we time-honored classics?  We think it’s partly that we blend into our enclosures at the adoption fairs, and the many colorful puppies stand out more.

We are mixes of several breeds including Black Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, and a bit of Australian Cattle Dog.  We all have different personalities, but share fine physical traits:  Our elegant, glossy black coats stay clean and are easy to care for – plus, we go with everything!  Some of us even have fetching snowy patches on our throats or chests, and a curl to our tail.

Black Dog

I'd love to give you hugs

It’s easy to choose a great  name for a black dog.  In addition to all the usual favorites, there are:

Sable, Charcoal, Coal, Inky, Ebony, Nubian, Jet, Pitch, Raven, Obsidian, Onyx, Slate, Sloe, Midnight, Velvet, Tuxedo, Mavro and Mauro (Greek for Black), Nero (Italian for Black), Minuit (French For Midnight) – but we’ll happily answer to any name you call us!  Believe us, we’ll come running!

A Classic Black and White Puppy

As sad as we are that we don’t have homes of our own, that’s not even the worst of it.  The shelter is bursting at the seams with cats, dogs and puppies.  While we’re still there,  we’re taking up space that keeps other animals  from being rescued!  We’re very, very sorry, and we need your help.

Please be a  forever friend to one of us. Call Aileen at the shelter – 719-587-9663 – and ask her to bring us to the adoption fair on Saturday, January 17th.  A volunteer can let us out of our enclosures so you can get to know us and see how pretty we really are.

Help! ...I need somebody. Help! ...Not just anybody.

Help! ...I need somebody. Won't you please, please help me.

Featured Pal: Snowball (Shepherd Mix Needs A Great Home)

January 2, 2009
Snowball

Snowball

Snowball is a young, medium sized  German Shepherd mix.  He is a beautiful dog with a creamy coat that accents his dark eyes.  He is lively and upbeat, except for a quirk –  he does not enjoy being in a cage, and when he is, doesn’t put his best foot forward.  He needs to go to a home where he won’t be crated.

What would be more fun than having a Snowball to play with this January?   Call Aileen at the shelter,  – 719-587-9663 – and ask her to bring Snowball to the adoption fair.  A volunteer can let him out of his enclosure, so you can enjoy his company.

Featured Pal: Max (Affectionate Chow Mix Wants Someone To Call His Own)

January 2, 2009
Max

Max, sitting still after a hug

Max, a Chow mix, is about a year old, so he won’t get much larger than his current smallish medium size.  His wonderfully soft golden coat complements his sunny disposition.  Max is very, very affectionate and seems eager to please.  Like many dogs who spend their lives kenneled, he needs some help with house breaking and etiquette.

Could you be the one to give Max the hugs and special home he longs for?  Call Aileen at the shelter – 719-587-9663 –  and ask her to bring Max along to the adoption fair, or make an appointment to see this sweet dog at the shelter.
